    Ken McMillanMiddletown Times Herald- RecordNew Paltz high jumper Livi Lathrop was the only repeat winner on day one of the 2025 Section 9 girls track and field state qualifying meet, at Monroe-Woodbury. Lathrop won at 5 feet, 1 inch and fewer misses. She tied for the event lead in 2024 at 5-2. She is the first back-to-back winner since Ashley Grant of Monroe-Woodbury in 2009-10. Warwick pole vaulter Rachel Venter won for the second time, following her 2022 win.

    Ken McMillanMiddletown Times Herald- RecordMiddletown discus thrower Myles Berry was the lone athlete to repeat as an event champion on day one of the boys track and field state qualifier at Monroe-Woodbury High School on June 4. Berry threw the discus 160 feet, 7 inches, to win the event by more than nine feet, easily securing his spot at the state meet. Berry threw 158-9 to lead the 2024 qualifier. It was the best winning throw since Robert Detz of Chapel Field threw 164 feet in 2015.

    Ken McMillanMiddletown Times Herald- RecordThe New York State softball tournament has gotten underway, and five of six Section 9 champions are just one win away from reaching the Final Four competition in the Binghamton area. Middletown (Class AAA), Goshen (AA), Marlboro (A), Pine Plains (C) and Eldred (D) all received first-round byes and need just one win to reach the semifinals. Highland (B) plays a first-round game on June 3 and a win will leave the Huskies one victory from the semifinals.

    State top-ranked Marlboro survived a late scare from Saugerties, scoring five runs in the sixth inning for an 8-3 win over the Sawyers in the Section 9 Class A softball final on June 1. Saugerties rallied from a 3-0 deficit with a run in the top of the fifth inning and two more to tie the game in the sixth. But in the end the Sawyers will think back to the lost opportunities throughout the contest, stranding nine runners in all and five in scoring position.
