When we hear elected officials, the media, and community members discuss the criminal justice system, almost always, these discussions focus on the police. However, as we know, the real criminal justice system is much broader, encompassing courts, prosecutors, county and elected officials, schools, probation, parole, prisons, county jails, and communities. As police leaders, we know that if any part of a system breaks down, the whole system fails.

I’ve seen firsthand the noble ideals that make policing one of the most meaningful and rewarding professions. Those who are drawn to this career bring with them admirable values and virtues, including courage, selflessness in service, and honesty. Our communities depend on us to maintain safety, uphold justice, and foster trust, and we fulfill those responsibilities on a daily basis. All police personnel are true public servants who help people in so many ways.

I would like to thank IACP Immediate Past President Wade Carpenter for his outstanding leadership over the last year—in both words and in actions, he has made all of us and our association look good. Thank you, Chief Carpenter, for your efforts and dedication on behalf of the IACP and the policing profession. When Kevin Dedmon walked into a New Mexico pizza shop with two 60-year-old women and a young man, the hostess told the visitors to sit anywhere they liked. “We’re not here for pizza,” replied the pastor from Northern California’s Bethel Church. “We’re on a treasure hunt.” After they showed her clues the Holy Spirit had revealed prior to the group’s visit, the woman said, “I’m not a treasure. I’m an atheist.” Then she asked them to leave.
