    I’m a member of the growing group of people who are learning of their neurodivergence in adulthood. At 37, I was diagnosed with ADHD and autism. Daily life is interesting, to say the least, with two conditions that try to pull me in different directions. I don’t really lose car keys or paperwork. Still, my home office is a mess. I can focus for hours on my favorite topics and watch video after video on YouTube.

    Growing up in the church, I learned early that God does, in fact, love me. I gave my life to Christ early in life. But I didn’t quite understand yet why God made me so “out of the box.” And it would be a longer journey of learning to appreciate who and what God made me to be. Ever since boyhood, I always felt different. Everything from the way I acted, the way I thought and the way I interacted with my own peers felt unusual.

As a matter of fact, I’ve also stopped paying monthly so I can get paid on Medium. I figured until I grow to a specific spot here, there’s no reason for me to pay monthly in an effort to generate income. Something else…I’ve seen a lot of support for my articles on Autism Spectrum Disorder.

I began my journey as a writer many years ago and only recently found myself in the world of full-time freelance writing and cartooning. Unfortunately, Medium has taught me a valuable lesson on…well…knowing my value. The details of that lesson is definitely worth a future article.

    After serious conversations with my wife, my doctor, and counselor, I decided to take a very serious and big step. On Friday Morning, August 23, I took my first 20mg tablet of Adderall XR. Before doing so, I stared at the green looking tablet with tiny pebbles in it. I stared at it in my hand for what felt like forever. I knew what I was taking wasn’t going to solve all of my problems. But I knew it was one of the many tools that would soon be in my toolbox to help me manage my ADHD.
