On a sunny West Australian summer afternoon, a "brand new" seaplane with little more than a week of flight time on its books plunged into the Indian Ocean shortly after taking off from the water. Police, civilian vessels and patrol boats immediately sprung into action to help six passengers and one pilot still on board when the plane crashed into a large rock in a packed Thomson Bay on Rottnest Island.

An artificial reef installed at a Fremantle dog beach to reduce coastal erosion by weakening wave energy has led to a 10 per cent reduction in wave force. Early results show the reef has also fostered marine life, with the number of fish species nearly doubling, creating a popular spot for snorkelling. The researchers involved hope the trial could serve as a model for slowing coastal erosion at other beaches.

Four men who allegedly scammed bank customers out of more than $350,000 after obtaining their account details in an elaborate phishing scam have been arrested by WA Police. The men, who police say are part of an organised criminal syndicate, are aged between 19 and 31 and face 70 offences, including fraud and stealing.

An off-duty police officer has died while diving at a popular beach in Perth's northern suburbs. Police and other emergency services were called to Mettam's Pool, north of Trigg Beach, at about 10:30am on Tuesday in response to reports of a diver in distress. The woman aged in her 40s was removed from the water and first aid efforts began, but the first class constable was declared dead at the scene.

A prominent Perth chef and Italian restaurant owner has been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for sexually assaulting three of his female employees. Maurizio Di Ciano, who once ran the restaurant at the WA Italian Club as well as the now-closed No Menu restaurant in Highgate, was arrested in 2021. Police said the workers were aged in their 20s and 30s and were all foreign nationals who were recently employed in their roles when the offences occurred.

A 68-year-old man who assaulted seven "isolated" and "vulnerable" women who were working for him as NDIS-funded carers has received a 12-month suspended prison sentence and a $2,000 fine. During a trial earlier this year, Brian John Odlum was convicted of seven counts of indecent assault and four counts of common assault for inappropriately touching female victims in his home.
