Food deserts are a persistent and growing problem in both rural and urban Virginia. Nearly 1 in 5 Virginians live in a community with low access to a grocery store, significantly higher than the national average. This lack of access to fresh food is a monumental hardship that strips Virginians of their dignity, their long-term health, and their communities’ vitality. The entrenched problem of food deserts in Virginia has a clear cause.

This past weekend, the Case Western Reserve University Department of Theater presented “Silent Sky,” a production depicting the life and research of astronomer Henrietta Leavitt. It was directed by Lisa O’Brien and David Vegh. Leavitt, who lived and worked in the early 20th century, most notably discovered how to determine the size of the universe by measuring the distance between stars. The production focuses on Leavitt’s time working at the Harvard College Observatory in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

These firms have targeted hundreds of industries, from manufacturing to supermarkets to nursing homes and drug rehab centers to veterinary services and more. In 2000, private equity firms held about 4 percent of U.S. corporate equity. By 2021, it was almost 20 percent.
