On the other hand, however, descendants of people who were the victims of such laws in the past do indeed suffer the residual negative implications of those laws. It is not unreasonable to assume that the grandchildren of victims of Jim Crow laws, for example, have less wealth (and fewer of the opportunities that typically accompany wealth) than classes of people who were favored by them. Eliminating the laws has not magically eliminated their residual effects.

But Lodge’s gift was to write ironically without sarcasm. While academics could see themselves in the wickedly funny portraits of university faculty in Lodge’s novels, none could claim that he was unfair or mean-spirited. His writing shined a light on the foibles of academic life, but always with a light touch and self-deprecating charm.

There are enough tentacles reaching out from this Kraken of a story to concern anyone capable of reason, but the most troubling is the recent poll out of Emerson University showing that 41% of voters aged 18-29 find Mangione’s alleged cold-blooded action an acceptable means to an end.

Michael’s belief that his problems were solved simply by “declaring bankruptcy” is not unlike our tendency to declare a New Year’s resolution without considering the practices and habits that put us in an undesirable state in the first place. We think we can stop some detrimental behavior — or begin some salutary one — simply by resolving to do so.
