On the other hand, however, descendants of people who were the victims of such laws in the past do indeed suffer the residual negative implications of those laws. It is not unreasonable to assume that the grandchildren of victims of Jim Crow laws, for example, have less wealth (and fewer of the opportunities that typically accompany wealth) than classes of people who were favored by them. Eliminating the laws has not magically eliminated their residual effects.

This does not violate the spirit of the law in states that permit abortion on demand, but it does send a signal that federal tax dollars will not be used to pay for it. A state’s decision to allow abortion on demand should have consequences.

The United States has just endured the most rancorous and contentious presidential campaign in most of our lifetimes. Many pundits (including this one) have also described the campaign as the most divisive in U.S. history. I still believe it was. But what has emerged from the divisiveness is the most diverse coalition that any Republican presidential candidate has ever assembled. President-elect Trump won record numbers of votes from African Americans and Hispanics by a Republican candidate.
