It’s always surprised me, as perhaps it has many people in America and around the globe, that the tiny country of Israel commands so much of the world’s attention. There are certainly other places with bigger problems. In Afghanistan, for example, over 25 million people (half of them children) are suffering through a severe drought and widespread malnutrition.

It was a sweltering Sunday afternoon a few weeks ago at Camden Yards, over 100 degrees and counting. Both sweat and beer were flowing freely. The Orioles had just come from behind to beat the Yankees, their rivals for first place in the fiercely competitive American League East pennant race. Sandy Rosenberg, a veteran member of the Maryland House of Delegates and a lifelong Orioles fan, was walking in the parking lot alongside a man sporting a Yankee pinstripe uniform jersey.

With three grandchildren currently serving on active duty with the Israel Defense Forces in Gaza, our views of the war there are perhaps felt more intensely than those of most other Americans. Of course we are repulsed by the bloodthirsty atrocities committed by Hamas against innocent civilians, but just as we are duly proud of their patriotism, we worry daily about their welfare. Our oldest grandson spent some time with us in Baltimore as a kid.

The National Pastime takes on an added dimension when your team is doing well, becoming a soul-massaging diversion from the ubiquitous bad news of the day. The Orioles' recent success has shaken loose memories of glory days gone by - and spurred hope for the future. Sitting with my grandkids on a muggy summer day, I recall going to my first game, in 1953, a minor-league affair in the old one-level Municipal Stadium on 33rd Street. I had just turned 10.
