    Let’s call it the conflict over the conflict. As the war between Israel and Hamas enters its fifth month, American university campuses continue to be a second front in a proxy war. Early on, university presidents waded in with statements that were attacked for supporting Israel, or the Palestinians, with insufficient zeal.

    In the aftermath of Hamas’s brutal October 7 massacre, a number of chapters of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and other student groups issued statements praising as “resistance” Hamas’s killing of babies, raping of women, and seizing of hostages — all of which violate the laws of war, not to mention basic human norms. We share the outrage. But we are deeply concerned by efforts to suppress rather than respond to this expression.

After all, they are going to be disturbed by ideas for the rest of their lives. They have to figure out how to navigate ideas if they are to become critical thinkers, an important skill for any profession. How do we navigate difficult issues?

    No reference was made to the amount of money the Rosenwald Fund gave for the education of Black students in Oklahoma in "Rosenwald Schools helped educate Black students in segregated South. Could a national park follow?" on Aug. 14. From 1920-1942, that amount was $177,921, the equivalent of slightly more than $3 million today. Of those funds, $75,000 helped erect more than 100 school buildings and teachers' houses from 1920-1924.
