The bromance between Donald Trump and Elon Musk has suddenly become a feud. The immediate cause was Musk’s condemnation of a House spending bill that would massively increase the national debt while Trump supports the measure. It’s a clash of massive egoes in a bad breakup.

Trump angrily urges Walmart to “eat the tariffs“ and absorb added costs from Trump’s trade wars rather than pass the costs on to customers. Traditional Republican conservatives would have considered Trump’s diatribe as improper meddling in private business. This is a new world.

President Trump prides himself as a deal maker based on his experience as a businessman. But dealmaking in politics is much more complicated. Some Republicans are expressing new doubts about a House-passed spending bill because it would massively increase the national debt.
