First Lady Misty Wainwright kicked off the second annual Celebration of Lights on Tuesday night by lighting the Christmas tree outside the Student Union. The night featured Christmas-themed activities, such as cookie decorating and riding a mechanical bull dressed as a reindeer. Students could buy food from a pair of food trucks and receive hot chocolate from a stand outside. DJ Trigga Trey, who frequently works at SLU events, provided music throughout the night.

My days of casual film viewing are over. Now, I’m Southeastern’s newest, loathsome cinephile snob. I’ve undergone the standard initiation: buying a MUBI subscription and watching low-budget arthouse films in the early hours of the morning. I even went to the movie theatre by myself, specifically to watch Winter 2024’s critical darling, “Anora.” American director Sean Baker’s latest film has had a stellar year. In May, “Anora” won the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Festival.

The American two-party system has once again spat out a pair of unlikeable candidates, much to the displeasure of the American electorate. On Nov. 5, voters such as myself will embrace the quadrennial tradition of slumping to the polls, and most of us will feel greatly underwhelmed, even by the candidate we choose. Regardless of November’s eventual winner, America is in dire straits. However, there are levels of incompetency, and in that respect, our two candidates are not equal.

Categories: Hurricane Francine made landfall late on Wednesday, Sept. 11 as a category 2 storm, resulting in high rain totals, strong winds and widespread outages. Due to the storm, Southeastern closed from 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10 to 7:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 13, after initially planning to reopen Thursday, Sept. 12. On-campus residents were urged to leave, while those who stayed had to remain in their rooms.

As a freshman in 2022, I took every opportunity I could. I was a senator in SGA, a member of Lions Toastmasters and an orientation leader. I overextended myself to satisfy my rampant ambition, despite the toll such efforts took on me mentally. I also started a job at The Lion’s Roar during my whirlwind freshman year, and initially didn’t think much of it. I’m a comm major, so I figured my time here would simply bolster my resume.

Dr. William S. Wainwright, the president of Southeastern Louisiana University, completed his first year at the helm of the institution this summer. Wainwright entered the 2023-2024 school year as SLU’s 15th president after being chosen to succeed former president Dr. John L. Crain on May 1, 2023. During his first year, Wainwright said he spent much of his time listening and learning from students and faculty by asking questions and attending classes around campus.

The Mane Dish, Southeastern’s primary food service option on campus, underwent renovations this summer and is scheduled to fully reopen at the beginning of the fall semester. The renovations are in agreement with Auxillary Services’ new contract with Aramark, Southeastern’s longtime food services partner. The contract requires new seating, the creation of a small meeting space and the addition of branded food stations, each featuring unique cuisines with its own distinct name.

During this time, aptly named the Golden Age of Musicals, the art form dominated the cultural zeitgeist, and movie musicals were regularly in contention for major awards, such as the Academy Award for Best Picture. Viewers everywhere flocked to theaters, excited to see performers like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers tap to their heart’s delight or see Gene Kelly splash around on the rainy sidewalk. Those days are over.
