A heavily armed gunman carried out the deadliest attack on law enforcement in almost eight years on April 29, 2024, in a neighborhood in Charlotte. He shot eight people, four of whom died, including U.S. Marshal Tommy Weeks. Now, a year later, his wife is speaking with WXII about the incident, which started as an attempt to serve an arrest warrant for possession of a firearm by a felon and fleeing to elude, and ended with police shooting and killing the gunman at the scene.

State lawmakers are right in the middle of their legislative session, and WXII 12 News had the opportunity to interview Senate President Phil Berger at his office in Raleigh. He says the number one job of the legislature right now is to make sure they've done everything possible to help the people of western North Carolina, but they're also waiting to see what the federal response will look like, moving forward. He hopes to be able to vote on the senate's version of the budget before Easter.
