NESCOPECK TWP. — As Jen Broyan walked through her field, she pointed to clumps of strawberries starting to redden but also strips of black plastic where no plants grew. About half of the crop didn’t materialize so Broyan canceled a tradition on the farm that she owns with her husband, Francis, and son, Logan. For the first time in 15 years that the Broyans have raised strawberries, they won’t let customers enter the field to pick.

For her birthday, Judith Marsilio Whitaker decorated around East Broad Street with banners of family members who served in the military. Whitaker was on May 8 or VE Day, the anniversary of the Allies’ victory in Europe in World War II. Six of her relatives fought in WW II, her father, Nicholas Marsilio and four uncles Arthur Marsilio, Robert Marsilio, J. Francis Lyman and Paul Lyman. All returned home safely.

A 26-year-old Hazleton man charged after a shooting in which one man was killed an another was wounded inside a restaurant early Sunday also had been charged after a drug investigation last year. Jose Sandoval Perez fired multiple rounds from a stolen 9mm handgun inside a restaurant at 921 Alter St., police said in the probable cause affidavit. He continued shooting as he left the restaurant and narrowly missed another patron, the affidavit said.
