It’s time to rewrite the story of single motherhoodI recently received a pitch that began:Single moms are superheroes — twice the work, twice the stress, twice the tears. I experienced the same cringey reaction that I experience whenever anyone refers to mothers as “super” anything. Not because we’re not super, but because the idea that mothers need superpowers to raise small humans drives me nuts. None of us became mothers, single or otherwise, because we wanted to be superheroes.

I have always appreciated small things. Not necessarily the “small things in life” (though I appreciate those, too) but small spaces, small businesses, small towns. I’ve lived in small houses for my entire life, driven small cars, and sought out urban neighborhoods with a small-town feel. Most things are so much better when they’re small, which is ironic, because I live in a country that worships BIG. We like BIG houses, BIG cars, BIG cities.

Whenever I travel, I spend a disproportionate amount of time looking into mirrors. That’s because the mirrors at hotels and AirBnbs are often positioned under higher-wattage lighting than my dim bathroom bulb at home, and they often show me angles of myself that I’m not used to looking at. It doesn’t particularly please me, gazing into new mirrors.

Men, I’ve heard, aren’t doing too well. They are lonely. They are depressed. They are underemployed, undereducated, and underloved. As a woman, I have empathy for male suffering because I have empathy for all human suffering. Yes, suffering is part of life, but I’m of the humble opinion that we are all doing far too much of it, particularly considering how many resources and how much knowledge we have at our disposal.

In a @voxdotcom article, @rmc031 asks: "How to explain why... it is women with the most financial resources, and the highest levels of education, who report the most stress and unhappiness with motherhood?" In this @SubstackInc story, I attempt an answer: https://t.co/KRAPHkyX94

In this week's @Medium story, I quote one of my favorite poems by @ClintSmithIII and ask the question, "Why is it still such a rare sight to see dads alone in public with their children?" p.s. The entire poetry collection, Above Ground, is amazing! https://t.co/3qa13qcV3d

If we had free range neighborhoods, summer could be more joy and less headache for #workingmoms. Check out @FreeRangeKids and @LetGrowOrg's important work!

"For Working Moms Summer is Expensive & Exhausting: Suggestions Needed!" Lazy, hazy days of summer? Ha! Parents have to figure out how to keep their kids out of their hair (and not always on screens). Read the post by @KeralaTaylor & add some tips! https://t.co/BXqJhdGCTb https://t.co/vWe4iqdOKV
