A new quality-of-life ordinance regulating the health, safety and cleanliness of the Borough of Northampton went into effect on May 1. This ordinance, approved by borough council in April, will levy compounding fines for property maintenance and snow removal violations, among others. During the May 1 council meeting, Borough Manager Brian Welsko urged residents to read the ordinance online and become familiar with the new regulations.

The Borough of Northampton will lose two dedicated employees over the next several weeks. During the April 17 borough council meeting, it was announced that Steve Urban, wastewater sewer plant operator for the borough for over 26 years, will retire effective June 30. “That sewer plant is not going to be the same without you,” Borough Manager Brian Welsko said in a message to Urban.

During their April 10 meeting, the East Allen Township Board of Supervisors expressed concerns over widespread dumping and littering in the township. “Is illegal dumping worse than ever?” Supervisor Roger Unangst asked township public works members. “[Because] it seems worse than ever to me.”Public works acknowledged an increase in repeated dumping, especially on Locust Road. Construction materials have been dumped in the same spot over the last several weeks.

During their April 8 meeting, the Allen Township Board of Supervisors discussed safety enhancements at the intersection of Kohls and Indian Trail roads. The intersection was recently reopened following bridge construction by PennDOT. This new construction included adding a guardrail to Kohls Road, alongside the Hokendauqua Creek. However, the township is wondering whether this rail can be extended to improve safety for drivers.

During the April 3 Northampton Borough Council meeting, longtime tax collector Judith Ackerman announced she is retiring after this year and will not seek reelection. Ackerman has been a dedicated member of the community. In addition to her time as Northampton’s tax collector, she also serves on the Northampton Exchange Club. “Thank you very much,” she told council and borough staff. “I’ve had a fun time, and I’ve enjoyed the people very much.”Ackerman was thanked for her years of service.
