The development and construction of CedarView Center, a 118-acre multi-use complex in Cedar Park, Texas, is moving forward with great enthusiasm from the city and the business community. Nebraska Furniture Mart (NFM), the Omaha, Neb.-based home furnishing company, is building CedarView, and will have a major retail presence there when the work is completed.

My niece MH is a skilled baker. Despite her youth, she has become the go-to member of the family when a dessert is needed for a gathering. She recently sent me a photo of a cake she made, and I was dazzled. Upon request, she kindly shared her recipe and technique. The lemon curd filling is tricky — MH had a snafu on her first attempt, which resulted in what she described as “scrambled eggs,” but she intrepidly tried again, and the results were splendid.

Keri WhiteSpaghetti all’Assassina translates to “assassin’s spaghetti.” It is also known as “spaghetti bruciati” or “burnt spaghetti” and originates in the city of Bari in the Puglia region in the heel of the Italian boot. The origins of the dish are murky. Some say it was created in a bar in Bari when two patrons from out of town requested a unique dish, and the chef created it on the fly. When asked, the diners kvelled over the dish and called the chef “a killer” in praise of his culinary skill.

— a schmear of cream cheese, a slice of lox, some capers and sliced red onions — it’s modern manna. We did a breakfast bagel spread over winter break when we had a bunch of overnight guests and, true to form, my generous husband over bought. We ended up with a dozen or so surplus bagels and a bunch of leftover lox. To be clear, I am not complaining; extra smoked salmon is pretty much always good news, and we sent most of the leftover bagels home with our guests.

Every now and then someone will bake for me. That is a happy day indeed and, as it turns out, occurred twice in the last month. The first treat was a pumpkin cheesecake from my dear friend Leslie Kase. Kase, a nice Jewish girl from Kansas City by way of Chicago, came to Philly for love and stayed. She is a great hostess, a world traveler and, as I learned last week, a good baker.
Whole Roasted Cauliflower: 2 for 1 Dish

This dish is a showstopper: The presentation is dramatic, it is low effort and you can season or dress it to your taste. If you get a large enough cauliflower (or roast two smaller ones), the leftovers form the base for a delicious and healthy soup for tomorrow’s menu. I roasted my cauliflower with garlic, lemon, salt, pepper, oil and a bit of yogurt (use mayonnaise or non-dairy yogurt if a pareve dish is required).

I did not believe this could work. I had been hearing about this miraculous two-ingredient dough for a few months, but I was completely skeptical that it would produce anything more than a biscuit. Not that there is anything wrong with a biscuit, but they are a very different type of bread — crumbly and flaky — not a crusty pizza dough or a chewy bagel.

My friend hit the son-in-law lottery: Her daughter married a doctor who bakes. So, my friend can chat with Dr. J about her bunions and backaches and then exchange recipes for babka and banana bread. Truly a mother-in-law’s dream. The hermit cookies below are the result of a recent trip to visit the son-in-law-doctor (her daughter was there, too). When my son was young, he and I often baked together.

I recently saw a social media post commenting about how vegetables are often unfairly relegated to side-dish status. The writer posited that meat, which generally garners top billing, is less interesting than vegetables. The variety of tastes, textures and colors of veggies should earn them a more prominent spot on the plate. And, of course, I fully recognize the rise in plant-based eating, flexitarianism and other diets that de-emphasize the consumption of animals.
