INTRODUCTION Close to 100% of the roughly 180 g of glucose that enters the glomerular filtrate each day is reabsorbed. This vital physiological process takes place exclusively in the proximal tubule and is mediated by two sodium-linked cotransporters, sodium-glucose linked cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) and SGLT1. Under normal circumstances, up to 97% (160–180 g) of glucose reabsorption is mediated by SGLT2, while the remainder, a mere 3% (5 g) is undertaken by SGLT11.
