At an estimated 2500 Gt, the carbon pool in soils is about four times the size of the vegetation pool (estimated 650 Gt) and is the largest terrestrial pool of carbon [Citation3]. Globally, most agricultural soils have lost 30 to 75% of their antecedent soil organic carbon pool or 30–40 t C per hectare due to intensive agricultural practices [Citation4,Citation5].
