The words come automatically, maybe murmured while driving or waiting in line or by a hospital bed. Perhaps part of a plea or in gratitude. Maybe you’ve known these words since childhood, learned them without trying simply by hearing them over and over at bedtime with your parents.

A Reflection for Wednesday of the Fifth Week of EasterFind today’s readings here. He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit,and everyone that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit. The rose bush in front of my house became wildly overgrown a few years back. In the hopes of preserving the plant’s integrity and avoiding being attacked by its unwieldy thorns every time I walked by, I researched the perfect time to prune it: early spring, before there is much new growth.

It seems counterintuitive, but when something good happens in our lives, we may sometimes feel a combination of both joy and fear. We may be grateful but also wonder: Am I worthy of this? What happens next? Especially if the news marks a big life change—perhaps a birth or an engagement, a promotion or a move—sharing that news can make it feel more real.
