    The Victorian Department of Transport and Planning has approved a $1.7 billion project to create three towers adjacent to Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Market. To be known as Gurrowa Place, the project is part of the largest urban renewal project undertaken by the City of Melbourne, which will revitalise a 3.2-hectare site south of the heritage market.

    City of Melbourne councillors have voted unanimously in support of the development plan for a $1.7 billion precinct at the southern end of Queen Victoria Market. Designed by NH Architecture, Kerstin Thompson Architects, 3XN Australia, Searle × Waldron Architecture, Openwork, McGregor Coxall, Lovell Chen and Urbis, Gurrowa Place will comprise three towers, a Market Square, a cultural and civic building, new car parking and the restoration and revitalization of the Franklin Street Stores.

    A proposal that involves the establishment of three towers and a public green square at the southern end of Naarm/Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Market (QVM) is one step closer to becoming a reality, following Heritage Victoria’s decision to grant permit approval for the heritage aspect of the plan. The QVM holds great cultural and historical significance for Melburnians. A much-loved food and retail market has operated from the site since the 1870s.
