Coaches often say they never stop learning in their profession. Jeff Blashill, for example, says he needed all three years of the education he received in Tampa Bay to be ready to coach the Chicago Blackhawks. “I had a chance to see a team that had just won two Stanley Cups and went to a third Final, and what a championship team looks like, how they play, how they practice, and what their approaches are,” he said.

It’s useless to even guess what kind of team the Detroit Red Wings will have in 2025-26 before GM Steve Yzerman has completed his offseason refurbishing. But let’s give the Grand Rapids Griffins credit for already showing excitement for the team they will put on the ice next season. It’s still May, but the Griffins have already announced that their season home opener will be Oct. 17 against a still-to-be-determined opponent.

When its to guessing what changes Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman will make this offseason, what you don’t hear is probably more important than what you do hear. Historically, most of Yzerman’s significant moves, particularly his trades, have often come without hockey insiders finding out before they occur. Yzerman keeps his circle tight, and rival general managers respect him enough to go along with his desire to negotiate without everyone knowing what he is up to.

As we watch the Eastern Conference Final, it feels as if the Red Wings didn’t miss Shayne Gostisbehere as much as fans thought they would. The Detroit Red Wings tried to re-sign defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere last summer but they couldn’t agree on the terms of the deal. The 32-year-old Gostisbehere accepted a three-year deal from the Carolina Hurricanes for $3.2 million per season. The third year was the sticking point in Red Wings negotiations. Going to Carolina paid off for the Florida native.
