    I can tell it’s springtime. Topographical maps are spread out across the living room floor, guidebooks have been tagged, paddling gear is pulled out of storage and the house smells of moldy canvas bags and worn-out camp sneakers. It’s time to do a few gear repairs before the lake ice melts and the first black flies begin to emerge. Don’t wait until you get to your first campsite of the year to discover your tent fly is damaged. Set up your tent in your living room and check for mold and pin holes.

    Proud Canadians are now heading out shopping by the droves, armed with “Made in Canada” apps and flyers in hopes of defeating the US President Trump’s tariff war. Whether it’s McIntosh apples bought at Metro or a maple hockey stick purchased at Canadian Tire, this crusade-like zeal is hopefully sending a strong message to the American leader in charge. To be blunt, however, it’s not all that easy to shop 100 per cent Canadian, especially when it comes to camping gear.

    I went to the United States twice in the last couple of weeks to present at the Quiet Adventure Symposium in Michigan, and then at Canoecopia in Madison, Wisconsin. I came back from both with something like battle fatigue from this so-called economic trade war.
