Entering his first season as the head coach for the La Salle-Peru girls track and field team, Pat Carney was looking for a way to motivate his athletes. Carney, who previously was the team’s long-time jumps coach, read a book by Ryan Banta, a Missouri track coach, in the offseason given to him by L-P boys coach Adam Spencer that described a program where athletes were rewarded for setting personal records.

St. Bede senior Greyson Marincic is one of the top hurdlers in the area. The two-time state qualifier had a big week last week as he was a four-event winner in St. Bede’s senior night meet. He won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.65 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 43.83 seconds along with helping the 4x400 and 4x800 relays to victory to help the Bruins place second. Marincic also won the 300 hurdles in a meet at Bureau Valley in 42.98 seconds.

Henry-Senachwine 7, El Paso-Gridley 0: Lauren Harbison threw a two-hit shutout Saturday and broke the school record for career strikeouts in a nonconference victory in El Paso. Harbison struck out the first batter of the game to tie the old mark of 613 set by Kallie Walczak in 2006 then struck out the third batter to break the record. She finished with 12 strikeouts and has 624 for her career.

Mendota 9, Putnam County 8: The Trojans scored two runs in the sixth inning and two in the seventh to rally for a nonconference victory Friday in Mendota. Braiden Freeman went 3 for 4, scored three runs and drove in two for Mendota (8-13-1), while Evan McPheeters was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Jack Gillespie was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI. McPheeters was the winning pitcher in relief as he threw three scoreless innings, allowing one hit with five strikeouts and one walk.

At Monmouth: Mendota sophomore Mariyah Elam won three events and placed second in a fourth Thursday in the Three Rivers Conference Meet. Elam’s performance helped the Trojans place fifth with 59 points. Sherrard won with 145.5 points, Princeton (54.5) finished sixth and Hall (9.5) was 12th in the 12-team field. Elam won the 300-meter hurdles (46.35 seconds), high jump (1.73 meters) and triple jump (11.35m) and finished second in the 100 hurdles (16.16).

PERU - With no outs in the top of the seventh inning of a one-run game, Putnam County courtesy runner Peyton Barto took off for second base as St. Bede’s Gino Ferrari delivered a pitch. PC’s Cameron Spradling hit a line drive up the middle. With both Bruin middle infielders moving to cover second base, St. Bede second baseman Stuart McGunnigal was in position to snag the liner. He then fired to first base to double off Barto. “It was kind of an ‘Oh shoot’ moment,” Ferrari said.

At two different points in his life, John Beatty nearly took a different path from teaching. Both times, he chose the classroom. Beatty started in engineering but realized it wasn’t for him. “After half an internship, I decided it wasn’t something I was going to enjoy doing for a career, so I went back to what I thought I would like,” Beatty said.

Fieldcrest 4, Lexington 3: The Knights scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally for a Heart of Illinois Conference victory Wednesday in Wenona. Jordan Heider ripped an RBI triple to tie the game and later scored the winning run on a fielder’s choice. He finished 3 for 3 with two triples for Fieldcrest (12-9, 6-4 HOIC), while Drew Overocker doubled and scored and Lucas May and Eli Gerdes each had a hit and an RBI.

LA SALLE – On a night it celebrated its seniors, the La Salle-Peru baseball team got its bats going early and never let up. The Cavaliers sent 13 batters to the plate, recorded seven hits and scored eight runs in the first inning to spark a 16-4, five-inning victory over Rochelle on Wednesday at Huby Sarver Field in La Salle. “I thought we played outstanding,” L-P coach Matt Glupczynski said. “The biggest thing for me was seeing how we would focus the entire game.
