La Salle-Peru junior pitcher Taylor Vescogni was voted the Interstate 8 Conference Player of the Year after leading the Cavaliers to the league title with a 10-0 record. Sophomore catcher Makenzie Chamberlain, junior first baseman Anna Riva, junior shortstop Kelsey Frederick, senior second baseman/pitcher Callie Mertes and junior centerfielder Karmen Piano also were named to the first team. Junior right fielder Lydia Steinbach was an honorable mention pick.

The Henry-Senachwine softball team received a lot of support from the community during its postseason run. Fans lined the streets of Henry on Friday when the Mallards returned from winning their first sectional championship and the stands were packed for Henry’s 2-0 loss to Dakota in Monday’s Class 1A Sterling Supersectional. “It means a lot,” Henry senior catcher Kaitlyn Anderson said. “The community is a family. We play for more than just the people in the dugout.

STERLING - Henry-Senachwine found itself in uncharted territory Monday as the 2025 Mallards were the first softball team in school history to advance to the Elite Eight. Henry had a tough start as Dakota scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Ace Lauren Harbison and the Henry defense shut down the Indians the rest of the way, and the Mallards had several scoring chances but couldn’t push any across in a 2-0 loss in the Class 1A Sterling Supersectional.

Mendota senior Crystal Garcia was the Trojans’ top offensive threat all season. She showed that again during the postseason. Garcia scored the game’s lone goal in Mendota’s 1-0 victory over Princeton in the regional championship to give the Trojans their first regional title since 2012. She also scored the team’s only goal in a 3-1 loss to Byron in an Alleman Sectional semifinal. “Crystal really stepped up for us in postseason,” Mendota coach Nick Myers said.

The defending Prospect League champion Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp opened the season with a 3-3 week. After the Shrimp lost the opener 7-0 to the Clinton LumberKings on the road, they traveled to Quincy to sweep the Doggy Paddlers in a two-game set before winning the home opener 9-3 over the Normal CornBelters. Illinois Valley lost 7-3 to the CornBelters in Peru on Saturday before losing at Clinton on Sunday.
