The child who has been described as a “pedestrian” by gardaí was struck by a car in Portlaoise around 4.20pm on Saturday afternoon. The driver of the car, a woman in her 40s, was not injured. It was the second road tragedy in the Midlands on Saturday. A young man died earlier in the day in Westmeath and two others were injured when a quad bike and motorcycle collided. The Portlaoise accident involving the child occurred in a residential area called Kilminchy which is on the edge of the town.

Proposed new laws targeting short-term lets have been repeatedly hit by delays and ultimately died with the calling of the general election last November. They will now be one of the first items likely to be agreed when a cabinet sub-committee on housing meets today to assess how this Coalition will approach the housing crisis. It is expected ministers will agree to “update” the existing Housing for All programme later this year.
