The title of my article makes a bold statement. I'm basing it on the US Coast Guard requirements for establishing what's called a Surf Station. Surf Stations are required at locations where surf runs 8 feet or higher for more than 10 percent-that's 36 days-of the year. That's a real 8 feet measured by wave gauges and with lidar, not the 4-foot waves that some social-media sailors might call 8-footers.

"The idea came from a historical race called Albany to NY Marathon that started in the late 1920's," says Tim Sharkey, referring to a generations-old boat race down the Hudson River from the New York State capital of Albany to New York City's New York Harbor boat race on the Hudson River. "There were at one point over 300 entries from over 18 different states."Sharkey will be re-creating the run on September 13, 2025.
