CHULA VISTA — How do you define the 2024 St. Augustine football team? Back-to-back CIF Section champ is the best way — as strange as it may sound. The seventh-seeded Saints claimed their second section title in a row with a 13-7 victory over fourth-seeded San Pasqual in Saturday’s CIF San Diego Section Division 3 title game at Southwestern College. What didn’t define them was what propelled the young Saints.

CHULA VISTA – After starting the season 0-3, the Mater Dei Catholic football team was hearing the voices: “This is not their year.”The No. 2 seeded Crusaders thought differently, winning nine games in a row and advancing to the San Diego Section Division II final with a thrilling 17-14 victory over No.3 Helix on Friday night at Mater Dei Catholic. “This is proof, this team is something special,” said Mater Dei’s junior wide receiver Larell Parker.

CHULA VISTA – In a year of the quarterback around the county, one getting overlooked all to often is Mater Dei Catholic’s Kartell Purvis. He gave everyone a good look at his skills Friday night. The senior completed 11-of-13 passes for 249 yards and five touchdowns to lead the No. 2 seeded Crusaders to an impressive 47-14 victory over No. 7 Bishop’s in the Division II quarterfinal at Mater Dei Catholic Friday night. “I’m still waiting,” said Purvis, a senior with no firm college offers yet.

CHULA VISTA – Sometimes it looked like Eastlake was going backwards on the field more than forward – on both sides of the ball. Despite being penalized 11 times for 130 yards, the fifth-seeded Eastlake Titans got a pair of second half touchdowns passes from Tyler Balko to Hamza Hatahet to down a game but shorthanded Army-Navy Academy side 21-7 first round San Diego Section Division 3 match-up at Eastlake Friday night.

SAN DIEGO — Trailing 14-7 after a quarter, University City wasn’t going to be denied. The Centurions exploded for six unanswered touchdowns, running away with a 48-20 victory over host La Jolla on Friday night Gene Edwards Stadium in the regular-season finale for both teams. “They came out faster than us, but I knew if we kept the tempo going we’d be all right,” said UC running back Nakeem Smith, who finished the night with 85 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

CHULA VISTA – Mater Dei Catholic High School senior quarterback Kartell Purvis was rolling along, racking up 229 yards passing and three TDs in just a quarter and a half. Then, with 6:04 left in the half and a first-and-goal at the 8, Purvis was thrown for a 3-yard loss. Worse than that, he stayed down. Despite the injury knocking him out of the game, Mater Dei Catholic scored three more second half TD passes to soundly defeat visiting Otay Ranch 45-6 in a Metro Mesa League battle Friday night.

CHULA VISTA – Despite a slow start to the season, the Otay Ranch Mustangs are starting to believe they’re a pretty good football team. Rebounding from an 0-3 start, the Mustangs soundly defeated visiting Chula Vista 28-7 Friday night for their first four-game winning streak in six years in the Metro Mesa League opener for both teams. “It was a great effort, we’re starting to come around into a pretty nice football team,” said Otay Ranch head coach Brad Burton.
