On the first day of his second term as president of the United States, Donald Trump issued executive orders intended to relax—or eliminate—an array of federal restrictions on fossil-fuel production and timber-cutting on federally controlled lands. Other executive orders, as well as directives by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, have further eliminated federal protections. The existence of the newly designated Chuckwalla National Monument, which borders Joshua Tree National Park, is in jeopardy.

As people arrived at the Palm Springs High School’s black-box theater on the afternoon of Saturday, March 15, the mood was a mixture of expectant, happy and somber. They were coming to pay tribute to Ricky Wright, who impacted so many of their lives, directly or indirectly, during his tenure as the school’s principal from 1997-2012. Wright died at the age of 75 on March 8. In the lobby, attendees were met with colorful balloons, decorations, printed tribute cards and metal buttons.

On Jan. 31, the California Fourth District Court of Appeal upheld a Riverside County Superior Court ruling that the Coachella Valley Water District (CVWD) is required to reimburse to non-agricultural customers a minimum of $17 million. On March 12, CVWD filed an appeal with the California Supreme Court.

In October 2022, the residents of Lake Tamarisk Desert Oasis—located near Desert Center, some 50 miles east of Indio—learned that another industrial-scale solar installation was being developed, and this one was going to be right next door to some of their homes. Called the Easley project, and owned by Intersect Power (IP), the proposed solar installation sparked the coalescence of a group of residents opposing the development plans, fearing both environmental and aesthetic damage.

On Nov. 30, Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia completed his fifth and final term in office. It was the finale—for now, at least—of a meteoric political career which began with his election to the Coachella City Council in 2004, at the age of 27. Two years later, Garcia became the first directly elected mayor of Coachella, a position he’d hold for eight years. In 2014, the Democrat successfully ran to represent Assembly District 56.

It’s been a very good year for the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert—with the highlight coming back in May, when the museum buildings re-opened for the first time since the COVID-19 shutdowns arrived in March 2020. But even before that, good things were happening for the popular family destination: On Feb. 28, the Rancho Mirage Chamber of Commerce honored the venue with the “Heart of Rancho Mirage” award.
