Fall semester approaches, with its now-typical warning for faculty members to “prepare for an academic year that’s like nothing we’ve seen.” I don’t know about you, but I’ve become numb to that phrase. Part of the reason is simple exhaustion — as the online joke goes, “I’m tired of living in unprecedented times. Can we please have something precedented?”Technically, every new academic year has always been “like nothing we’ve seen” — new classes, new students, time has passed.

A right-wing news site recently targeted staff members at several universities in Texas. The undercover “reporter,” posing as someone who supports diversity, equity, and inclusion, secretly video-recorded the staff members’ answers to questions about what was possible under Senate Bill 17, the new law in Texas that bans DEI programming, offices, and employees. The resulting video segment led to the suspensions of several staff members while their institutions investigated.

Perhaps you’re offering a new course, or you’re looking to revamp an old one. Maybe that section you were scheduled to teach didn’t make enrollment, and now you’re facing a new prep with only a few weeks (or days!) to get ready. Even if you don’t need to write or revise a course syllabus, though, there’s never a bad time to re-examine and rethink your syllabi. As much as we exhort our students to Read The Syllabus, we ought to make sure we’re giving them something that’s actually worth reading.
