Introduction Each of us has a personalized ecology, a set of direct interactions with individuals of other species (Gaston et al., 2018). This can be defined in a broad or a narrow sense (Gaston et al., 2023). In the broad sense, it includes interactions with both micro and macroorganisms, with recent research attention having particularly focussed on the composition of the microbiome (Ursell et al., 2012).

1 INTRODUCTION Species distribution models (SDMs) are used frequently to infer the environmental suitability of locations across landscapes for species based on correlations between species records and environmental conditions (Elith & Leathwick, 2009; Guillera-Arroita et al., 2015; Guisan et al., 2013). Presence-only (PO) data, collected opportunistically by recorders, are often the only data available for modelling species' distributions.

I. INTRODUCTION Given the marked diel variation in abiotic (e.g. temperature, light levels) and biotic (e.g. predation, competition) conditions, it has long been believed that most above-ground terrestrial animal species can usefully be characterised as largely limiting their physical activity to a particular part of the daily light cycle.
