Garden gurus can borrow both plants and paperbacks this summer at a new plant library in Jensen Lakes. The Books and Blooms Propagation Library is set to open at the Jensen Lakes Library this June 24. The library offers patrons cuttings of indoor plants to grow at home and will be open all summer.

For decades he was St. Albert’s guide to the stars on ice and the stars above — a maestro of astronomical and hockey commentary. Now, St. Albert’s Bruce McCurdy dwells among those stars, watching the Edmonton Oilers from the heavens. Hundreds of Oilers and astronomy fans will be at the Telus World of Science Edmonton this Sunday, June 22 to pay tribute to Bruce Jefferson McCurdy, a renowned astronomer and hockey columnist who died from a heart attack on April 1, 2025. He was 69.

Peter Bailey is closing the book on his career as the head of St. Albert’s public library. The St. Albert Public Library Board announced in a letter June 17 that Bailey would retire as the library’s CEO this Aug. 31. Bailey has worked for the library for 24 years, the last 15 of which were as its CEO. Bailey, who turns 61 this year, said the upcoming council election and many recent staff retirements meant it was time to pass the torch.

Sir Alexander Mackenzie students will get to ride through history this week as St. Albert Public Schools unveils its new Red River cart. SAM School students will be the first in St. Albert this June 20 to get hands-on with a Red River cart recently acquired by the St. Albert Public school district. The cart’s rollout corresponds with the lead-up to National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21.

St. Albert’s Run for Reconciliation is getting ready to help Poundmaker’s Lodge rise from the ashes. About 400 people will rally at Lions Park this July 1 for the fifth annual Run/Walk for Reconciliation. Established in 2021, this annual event aims to raise awareness of the enduring trauma of Canada’s residential school system and encourage people to help build right relations with Canada’s First Peoples.
