    Dr. Kanwarjit Singh Panesar was a ‘surgical giant’ and a ‘man of compassion’ who developed a deep bond with the city of Derry during a half century of medical service. These were among the tributes paid to the former consultant after his death aged 84 on May 15. Born in the village of Dosanjh Kalan near Jalandhar in 1941, the pioneering surgeon was schooled in Nairobi, Kenya, before returning to his native Punjab to study medicine in Amritsar.

    Republicans from Derry and Donegal will join comrades from across the country at Bodenstown on Sunday to honour ‘the father of Irish republicanism’ Theobald Wolfe Tone. Veteran Derry republican Danny McBrearty will lay a wreath on behalf of the local branch of the National Independent Republican Commemoration at Tone’s grave in Sallins during a commemoration at 2pm on June 8. The commemoration will be chaired by republican former prisoner Sean McGuinness from Armagh.

    A new 40 miles per hour speed limit in Greysteel came into effect on Monday and will be in place for two months. The new speed restriction extends from a point on the A2 Clooney Road 500 metres west of its junction with the Carnamuff Road to its junction with Vale Road in the north Derry village. It will remain in place until August 1, the Department for Infrastructure has confirmed. The restriction has been put in place in order to facilitate roadworks that have been ongoing along the A2.

    A new coach-only lay-by for tourists visiting Free Derry Corner and other historic landmarks in Derry’s Bogside will come into operation this month. The bay will be located at Rossville Street immediately outside numbers 45 to 54 Glenfada Park. It will come into operation on Monday, June 16. Under a new Statutory Rule entitled ‘The Parking Places on Roads (Coaches) (Amendment) Order (NI) 2025’ only coaches will be allowed to park on a length of the roadway.

    An application to develop ten apartments at the back of Derry’s legendary traditional Italian ice-cream parlour and fish and chip shop Fiorentini’s has been lodged with the planners. Plans lodged with Derry City & Strabane District Council propose a change of use from a café at the rear of the premises at 67 Strand Road to an apartment.
