TrendsFigure 1 shows the emission trends for the 91 cities in our analysis (trend values of each city are provided in supplementary data as Table 1). Overall, we see rapid increases in urban CO2 emissions averaging 4.7%/yr. These averages conceal considerable variability across cities with emission trends ranging from −2.8%/yr (Madrid Spain) to 11.0%/yr (Xi’an, China). On average, the dominant contributor for CO2 emissions growth is the change in urban area, (3.5%/yr).
