    US secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, has confirmed that the Trump administration has ousted New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) from leading the Penn Station Reconstruction project in New York City. Amtrak, backed by the US Department of Transportation (USDOT), will instead spearhead the proposed $US 7bn overhaul of the station, the busiest in the western hemisphere.

    British open-access operator hoping to run five trains per day on the route via London Gatwick. GRAND Central, the British open-access subsidiary of Arriva, says it is submitting an application to regulator the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) to introduce a new direct service between Newcastle and Brighton via Gatwick Airport. Arriva says its application makes use of under-utilised capacity on the network and includes proposals to operate five trains per day in each direction.
