THE station building at Jaren, a town in central Norway, has the air of a museum. Once the workstation for the dispatcher responsible for this section of the Oslo - Roa - Gjøvik main line, visitors now crowd round to inspect the 60-year-old signalling equipment that up until November controlled train movements in and out of the station. While seemingly a relic of a bygone era, Jaren is in fact special as it is one of the few locations in Norway where this type of equipment is no longer used.
