The first winter storm hit the Pageland and Chesterfield County area on Friday, Jan. 10. Although there was a slight accumulation of sleet and ice from freezing rain and very low temperatures, the inclement weather did not live up to the hype (even if it did have the benefit of reminding everyone to be safe and warm just in case). That didn’t stop the age old tradition of the south cleaning out local grocery stores of two things: bread and milk.

BETTENDORF, IOWA (July 10, 2024) — United Way Quad Cities is proud to announce $144,763 awarded to twelve local organizations through the Emergency Food and Shelter Program, funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The grants are federally funded and administered by United Way Quad Cities. They are available to 501(c)3 non-profits, faith-based organizations, and government organizations that provide emergency food, shelter, and rental assistance in Scott or Rock Island counties.

Delivery drivers with Teamsters Local 396 extended their unfair labor practice strike to Amazon.com’s DAX5 warehouse in the city of Industry this week, picketing to rally support for higher wages and safer working conditions amid high summer heat. The more than 80 Palmdale-based workers — employed by logistics partner Battle Tested Strategies and subcontracted by Amazon — voted in June 2023 to join the union, hoping to boost wages to $30 hourly and secure better safety protections.

Student workers at Occidental College who say they’re grappling with low wages, inconsistent hours and job insecurity rallied for better working conditions on Wednesday, March 20, part of a larger campaign to unionize. Hundreds of teaching assistants, researchers, baristas, tutors, lifeguards and others descended on the campus quad to demand the college agree to a fair process for recognizing their union. The groups have launched a campaign to unionize with SEIU Local 721.

Union workers at 34 Southern California hotels will begin voting Thursday, March 21 to ratify tentative labor agreements with the hotels. Ratification results and terms of the labor contracts should be announced Monday, March 25 by Unite Here Local 11. The workers are among some 15,000 striking cooks, housekeepers, dishwashers and others at more than 60 Southland hotels who have staged protests over low wages and inhumane workloads.
