Princeton Historical Society to host veteran for spring program

The spring program of the Putnam County Historical Society will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 29, at the Meeting House, located at 403 Old Hwy 26, Hennepin. Raymond Torres of Sterling will speak about his experiences in Vietnam and his return after the war. Torres was a U.S. Navy Corpsman deployed to Vietnam in the fall of 1967. In Vietnam he was assigned to a Marine Corps company that participated in the vicious fighting of the Khe Sanh siege, where he was injured by a grenade and evacuated.

Heat wave expected in Illinois Valley this weekend

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory covering northern Illinois, including La Salle, Bureau and Putnam counties. The weather service warned of “oppressively hot and humid” weather and heat indices of more than 100 degrees. The heat wave was expected to last at least through Monday, and possibly until Wednesday.
Grand Ridge celebrates its Zip Code Day, a once-a-century event

The Grand Ridge Post Office serves as a place for residents to meet and socialize when they come to pick up their mail. On Friday, June 13, it was also a place for celebration, as the La Salle County community celebrated its Zip Code Day. Grand Ridge’s zip code is 61325, and when a town’s zip code matches the date, it’s Zip Code Day. Streator area Postmaster Kimberly Donner had never had a chance to celebrate one before, and she was glad she got to see one before she retires.

Murtaugh, now a Batavia resident, grew up in Riverdale, near south suburban Dolton where Pope Leo XIV, the former Cardinal Robert Prevost, grew up. The new pontiff is six years older, but they ran in similar circles. That potential personal connection isn’t why he is excited by the results of the recent papal conclave, however.

St. Charles teen killed in Indiana crash over weekend

A St. Charles teen was killed in a car crash in Indiana over the weekend, according to a report from Fox59 in Boone County, Indiana, and his sister injured. Jordan Laskowski, 14, was killed Friday, April 4, in a crash on Interstate 65 near Lebanon, Indiana, according to the Fox59 report. A GoFundMe set up for the family Sunday said the family was returning from a a Spring Break trip.
