Racing in the confines of a street track is always special. The wheel-to-wheel action may not always be the best, but the spectacle of top drivers flirting with the barriers make it one of the sport’s greatest challenges. That’s particularly true now that most conventional circuits, particularly in Formula 1, have large run-off areas. And it helps to explain why the Monaco Grand Prix, the 75th edition of which will take place this weekend, is considered by many as the jewel in F1’s crown.

Sixteen Australians have started world championship grands prix since 1950. Six have taken podiums, five have won races and two became world champions, with Oscar Piastri’s strong position at McLaren raising the possibility of a third. There have been several Australian talents who made it to F1 but didn’t get decent machinery. David Brabham and Larry Perkins suffered torrid times and failed to score a point but went on to success elsewhere.

The April event caters for sportscars, touring cars and single-seaters, ranging from the earliest days of the automobile to current machinery. Leading historic racer Mark Walker has escaped unscathed from being thrown from his car at the 82nd Goodwood Members’ Meeting. Walker’s Darracq 200hp was the fastest car in the S.F. Edge Trophy race for Edwardian machines and aero-engined specials that raced up to 1918. Despite a very long first gear that always makes the 1905 Darracq slow off the line, Walker had charged through to win race one on Saturday.
