Some of the top-earning South African bosses are raking in over three times that of the highest-paid banking CEOs.The top five listed all come from the mining sector – an industry that added R425.6 billion to the country’s GDP in the last financial year (representing 6.2% of the total GDP). The mining sector also created over 7 500 jobs, employing a total of 477 000 people, with total wages increasing by 7% to R186.5 billion, despite South Africa’s tough economic climate.

South Africans are preparing for a short week next week with Wednesday, 29 May declared a public holiday due to it being voting day in the country. In excess of 27 million South Africans aged 18 and older have registered to cast their vote at polling stations around the country. While not that many will end up doing so, the idea of queuing for hours on a public holiday isn’t everyone’s idea of fun. Many will already be looking ahead to the public holiday thereafter.

Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfield legend Hlompho Kekana has advised veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune to retire. Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed that Khune’s current contract will be his last. Despite this, the 36-year-old expressed his desire to continue playing after a goalless draw with Polokwane City. Kaizer Chiefs are ready to offer Khune a position as a goalkeeping coach but are unwilling to renew his contract as a player.

The official dam level stats in the Western Cape remain good with winter fast approaching. The six major dams in the Western Cape – the Berg River, Steenbras Lower, Steenberg Upper, Theewaterskloof, Voelvlei and Wemmershoek – are cumulatively ON PAR on the same date last year. The City of Cape Town uploaded its latest stats on Monday, 20 May. The latest figures show the six dams are a combined 59.9% of total storage. That’s marginally down from 61.3% the previous week.
