Severe weather continued to blow through Nunavut Thursday, prompting road closures and government offices to be shut down in several communities. In Iqaluit, periods of light and blowing snow were expected until the evening with winds 40 km/h and gusting to 60 km/h, according to Environment Canada’s forecast at 11 a.m. Thursday. Snow and high winds forced many offices to close Wednesday in Iqaluit, including city hall and recreational facilities.

Plan calls for adding new more fuel-efficient aircraft to fleet by end of decade A Montreal-based commercial charter airline has announced plans to expand its northern service by increasing its fleet of aircraft by the end of the decade. Nolinor Aviation has placed orders for Kona aircraft from Natilus, a U.S.-based manufacturer whose website says it builds hyper-efficient blended-wing-body planes designed to carry cargo and people.

More permanent fixes to be completed during summer, says government spokesperson Repairs to a broken pipe in Rankin Inlet that caused a temporary boil water advisory have been completed. A precautionary boil water advisory was issued Jan. 28 by the Department of Health for residents of Rankin Inlet after a water pipe broke on Jan. 26. Although the water treatment plant was functioning normally, residents were advised to boil their water in case contamination entered through the break.

A 23-year-old man faces three charges, including assault with a weapon, after an incident in Cambridge Bay led to an arrest and a search for drugs. On Jan. 29, RCMP officers were dispatched to a residence on Ublogiahokyok Road after receiving a complaint that a man was threatening people with a knife. After his arrest, officers saw what they believed were illicit drugs and drug paraphernalia and obtained a search warrant for the home, said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. George Henrie in a news release.
