Elderly Koreans bought more cars than those in their 30s for the first time this year as demographics and their values shift. Over-65s bought 247,407 cars in the first 11 months of this year, while those in their 30s bought only 205,040. This is partly due to an aging population and the shrinking young population due to a persistently low birthrate.

Korea has dramatically improved its readiness for the transition to electric vehicles. It jumped 10 places to become the eighth-most EV-ready country out of 40 countries in rankings by global market researcher Euromonitor International last week. Korea scored 60 points overall in the annual Electric Vehicle Readiness Index in four categories -- EV market maturity, infrastructure maturity, cost of ownership and consumer spending power.

Kia's large electric SUV, the EV9, is getting rave reviews in overseas markets although it has been struggling with sluggish sales in Korea. The EV9 won Denmark's Car of the Year Innovation Award by the Association of Danish Motor Journalists, which said it is Kia's finest car in all areas including design, technology, quality and performance. The vehicle was also named the Car of the Year by Spanish daily La Vanguardia.

Hyundai chairman Chung Eui-sun has been picked as industry leader of the year by U.S. magazine Automotive News. Each year, the venerable car magazine selects around 30 "All-Stars" in the global car industry and one of them is crowned "Industry Leader."Past picks include Sergio Marchionne, who led Fiat Chrysler, Mary Barra, the CEO of General Motors, and Ford chairman Bill Ford.

Hyundai is set to bring back the LPG version of its Porter pickup truck after a hiatus of about 20 years. The revival comes ahead of an impending restriction on registering diesel trucks for delivery use, effective from January of next year. Replacing the discontinued 2003 version, the new model boasts enhanced performance and features. Its engine features a 24-horsepower increase over its diesel counterpart.
