1 Introduction It is not uncommon to hear preregistration nursing students say that for them ‘clinical is the pinnacle’. This colloquial saying not only demonstrates the importance of clinical placement in their minds, but also reflects students' views that practical experience is an exciting and integral part of their nurse education.

Myths and misunderstandings about mental health nursing are damaging not only to the discipline but also affect the quality of services experienced by people needing mental health support. Contextually, these myths and misunderstandings abound due to stigmatising attitudes towards mental health, the dominance of generalist nursing in countries such as Australia and the United Kingdom, and generic undergraduate nurse education.

Visitors to the Texas Prison Museum this month have an opportunity to experience a limited-time exhibit created by Sam Houston State University’s College of Criminal Justice (SHSU CJ) graduate students. The exhibit features memorials honoring murder victims with a focus not on how they died, but how they lived. “It’s about who they were as people,” SHSU Department of Victim Studies Chair Shelly Clevenger said.

INTRODUCTION Nurses comprise the largest mental health workforce globally (WHO, 2021), with workforce shortages widely reported, including in the United Kingdom (Adams et al., 2021), Sweden (Holmberg et al., 2018) and the United States (Alexander et al., 2015; Rice et al., 2019). In Australia, by 2030 the national projected shortfall of nurses will be highest in the mental health sector (State of Victoria, 2019).
