North Carolina's newest Teacher of the Year received a champion's welcome this week at Wellcome Middle School, where she was honored as the first Pitt County Schools educator to win the award in its 55-year history. AVID teacher Rachel Candaso got a standing ovation from hundreds gathered in the Wellcome gym on Monday to congratulate her for being named the 2025 Burroughs Wellcome NC Teacher of the Year.

For more than a decade, the Stone Soup event has helped folks at St. Paul's Episcopal Church to feed their neighbors. Now the annual fundraiser may be a key ingredient for serving even more people in the community. River Park North, 1000 Mumford Road, is hosting its first pet photography contest. Participants are invited to snap a photo of their pet during a park visit through Wednesday and submit to [email protected]. Submissions will be shared on the River Park North Facebook page and voted on by visitors to the page. Voting will close on April 30. Prizes will be awarded to the top three pets with the most likes. Vape detectors to be installed at local high schools also will be programmed to identify THC, a school official said this week. Pitt County Schools Executive Director of Operations Aaron Errickson told the Board of Education that devices to be placed in six public high schools have greater capabilities than vape detectors installed in PCS middle schools less than two years ago. One result of the advanced technology is the ability to detect THC, an intoxicating compound found in cannabis.
