Some people might glance at Joe Peacos' prize-winning photo of an eastern kingbird poised to capture a dragonfly and think, "Lucky shot." But there are at least a thousand reasons it shouldn't be viewed that way. Peacos, a first-place winner in the city's River Park North and Wildwood Park Photography Contest, routinely shoots 1,000 pictures in a single day. Pitt County Schools has reported a second consecutive year of declining discipline problems, but some school board members said concerns over issues including fighting, suspensions and profanity persist. Executive Director of Student Services Sara English told the Board of Education on Monday that the school district saw a drop in the number of disciplinary referrals, from 31,999 in 2023-24 to 30,390 this school year.
