    The most recent “statesman politicking” from Mark Carney was with respect to the phone call that he had with United States President Donald Trump on March 28. According to Trump’s press release, the call was “extremely productive.” Carney’s companion release called it “constructive.” These press releases were heavy on adjectives and light on substance. In other words, they were all about the optics, not the outcomes.

    The celebration by the Liberal Party about these announcements is a master class in hypocrisy and short-term memory. Given the newness of Carney’s leadership, let’s unpack what we can expect from many of his policies, especially taxation, along with his leadership credentials. While Carney likes to brag that he was born in the Northwest Territories and grew up in Edmonton, such facts don’t make one more empathetic to the average Canadian’s struggles to put food on the table.

    The government is punting this toxic issue to the next government since it is very likely that an election will be called before the proposed implementation date. If the Liberal Party gets re-elected, it could decide to move forward with the proposals, but it could also decide to drop them like a hot potato.
