Iowa on Monday joins 17 other states in prohibiting abortion after six weeks gestation, changing the landscape of abortion access in the Midwest. The implementation of the six-week law comes after the state Supreme Court ruled last month in a 4-3 decision that the prohibition passed by the legislature could be enforced. The law allows for several exceptions, including in cases of rape, incest, and life and health of the mother.

A federal judge blocked a large portion of a law in Iowa on Friday that bans certain books from school libraries and stops teachers from talking about LGBT issues with elementary school students. The new injunction stops the law, which was passed by the Republican-led state legislature and signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) earlier this year, from going into effect on Jan. 1, 2024. However, many books have already been pulled from school libraries across the state.
