To the Editor: Crusted scabies (formerly known as Norwegian scabies) is a rare and highly contagious variant of scabies, in which the skin is infested with thousands to millions of Sarcoptes scabiei var hominis mites. We present a case of skin changes that were misdiagnosed as atopic dermatitis, seborrhea, xerosis, and drug eruption on initial presentation, which prompted treatment with a corticosteroid that inadvertently caused progression to crusted scabies.
