    It took 42 years for Sam’s Club to reach $90 billion in annual revenue, but CEO Chris Nicholas and his executive group plan to double the business in the next eight to 10 years — if not sooner. During a recent investor conference in Dallas, Nicholas said the time is right to expand the club footprint by adding 30 clubs over the next two years and remodeling all 600 club locations over the next decade.

    Grocery prices rose again in April, up 2.8% from a year ago and up 0.2% from March, according to the Consumer Price Index posted Tuesday (May 13) by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Overall food prices are up in six of the last seven months. The BLS reports that the index for food eaten at home rose 2% over the past 12 months, led by meats and poultry, up 7% over the past year. Retail egg prices increased 49.3% year over year.

    Walmart is expected to report a first-quarter revenue gain of around 2.5%  on Thursday (May 15), but analysts caution that net income could fall 3.3% from a year ago. Walmart’s fiscal first quarter 2026 began on Feb. 1 and ended April 30. The retail giant is expected to report per share net income of 58 cents, down 2 cents from a year ago. Net income should top $4.64 billion, before one-time charges expected for liability claims and losses on foreign investments.

    At a time when Trump Administration tariffs threaten the apparel supply chain, Walmart announced a Trend-to-Product initiative that uses artificial intelligence tools to expedite the launch of on-trend, affordable fashion. The retail giant said the new initiative shortens the traditional production time for Walmart apparel by as much as 18 weeks, getting trending clothes in front of customers while demand is high.

    Consumer spending rose in April ahead of expected tariff impacts. The National Retail Federation (NRF) Retail Monitor had April sales, excluding gasoline and automobiles, up 0.72% from the prior month and 6.7% higher than a year ago. The Retail Monitor report is compiled by Affinity Solutions and tracks actual debit and credit card transactions among thousands of retailers. It does not need to be updated as survey data compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau does.
