Welcome back my Newville friends, to more about Kathy Frey and her lovely historic home. Of course, by now most Newvilians know Mrs. Frey lives in one of the oldest homes in Newville, the Laughlin House. Built in 1768, The Frey's are only the third owners outside of the Laughlin Family to lay claim to this beautiful stone home, due to the home being passed down from generation to generation in the Laughlin Family.

Cub Scout Pack #174 held their Blue & Gold Banquet recently to the delight of everyone involved. Although there were no Cub Scouts crossing over to the Boy Scout troop, as part of the banquet, Cub Scouts enjoyed a presentation by Friends of Scouting, as well as watching a fun camp video. They also feasted on a variety of homemade goodies and sweet treats.

Callings all kiddos! Spring is here and you know what that means...the Easter Bunny will be hopping around, looking to empty his basket of colorful eggs in the coolest location he can find. Word has it that he is planning to host an Egg Hunt on Sunday, April 13 at 2 p.m. at the Little League fields in Newville.

The most anticipated time of the year for kids once spring arrives, is opening day of Little League baseball. Dirty cleats come out of the garage, bats and balls are shoved in bat bags ready to hit the field, and gloves are conditioned and ready to be put to the test for another season. The fields inside Newville's Little League Complex are in the process of being prepared for opening day, April 12.

It would seem that I am not the only person in the area intrigued by cemeteries. In last week's Exploring Newville Then & Now, I asked that anyone with information about the Newville Cemetery to reach out to me. I strolled through this historic cemetery and was amazed by the amount of old headstones and grave markers. What caught my eye the most was the vast amount of lavish grave markers, monuments, and headstones throughout the cemetery.

Shippensburg Memorial Park, Veterans Stadium in particular, is currently in line to receive a much needed facelift thanks to the efforts of Shippensburg Area Athletic Association. The Shippensburg Area Athletic Association is an organization that provides financial support, time, commitment, and positive leadership to our local youth and adult sports programs in Shippensburg. They are sprear heading the efforts to bring much needed improvements to Veterans Stadium at Memorial Park.

Another piece of Shippensburg History was erased from the landscape in Shippensburg earlier this week. The former Anson Goodhart Plumbing shop, located to the rear of 107 E. King Street, was reduced to rubble and carted away. Goodhart was a family name in Shippensburg for many, many years. C. Anson Goodhart was a well-respected individual in town, and the local tax collector who was praised for his work, according to an article in the October 16, 1919 edition of the News-Chronicle.

Mt. Pleasant United Brethren Church, located at 2509 Black Gap Road in Chambersburg, held its annual Spaghetti supper on Saturday, March 15, to the delight of more than 500 hungry patrons. The church's fellowship hall was packed with folks who came hungry and headed back home with a smile on their face, having had a delicious meal!The all-you-can-eat affair was a welcomed addition to the cloudy, gray day outside.

Shippensburg University's Tuscarora room inside Reisner Dining Hall, was the site for the 85th annual Shippensburg Chamber of Commerce Awards banquet held on March 13. Filled to near capacity, the room was abuzz with lively conversation, a variety business acquaintances and individuals who help make Shippensburg the thriving community that it is. Dirk Bumgardner, Chamber Board Chairman welcomed guests and friends to the banquet.

What an interesting morning! On Friday, March 14, I had the awesome opportunity to spend time with fifth grade students at Newville Elementary, talking with them about the Shippensburg News-Chronicle and Valley Times-Star. It caught me off guard that many of them had no idea that Newville (their hometown) had a newspaper. Of course, it's understandable in today's society where cell phones, tablets, and laptops have replaced the written word, as far as newspapers are concerned.
