The Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) has issued a safety warning about water beads, which have become common children’s toys but could make for a dangerous Christmas present. If a child swallows one, they can cause bowel obstruction and the consequences can be fatal.

Travel plans continued to be affected by a “perfect storm” of adverse weather conditions at the weekend, as millions head home for Christmas in the UK. It comes as the Met Office is forecasting a “grey Christmas” this year, with some sunny spells and “extremely mild” temperatures. Heathrow airport said around 100 flights were cancelled on Sunday due to strong gales, with passengers advised to continue checking before they travel as the Christmas week begins.

The UK economy recorded no growth in the third quarter, revised down from an initial estimate of 0.1 per cent, the Office for National Statistics has said. Initial estimates suggested the economy had grown by just 0.1 per cent between July and September, and shrank during September. In September, the Bank of England’s chief economist had warned the new Government’s gloomy language had generated fear and uncertainty among consumers, businesses and investors.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has refused to set a timetable for migrant crossings despite admitting the numbers remain “far too high”. Nearly 13,500 migrants have been removed from Britain since the election, the Government has said, as the Home Secretary promised a “step change” in tackling illegal working. On Saturday, 609 people crossed Channel making it the highest December day on record.
