Not so much now. The past month has seen the Trump team on the back foot, and it’s mostly self-inflicted. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth can cast aspersions on “the hoax press” and the “deep state,” but it was his handpicked loyalists at the center of this storm. Whether he erred in hiring them or in firing them, the erring was his own. And it was his Signal texts that gave a circling press corps the opening it had been salivating for.
