    Parenting has always been hard. Ever since the fall in Genesis 3, kids have grown up in a dangerous, twisted, dark world. The first baby grew up to murder his little brother. And sin has infected children and parenting ever since. But modern parents seem to be having an especially hard time. The U.S. surgeon general recently released an advisory warning that parental stress is a significant public health concern as 4 in 10 parents say that most days they feel so stressed they can’t function.

    Many of the daily responsibilities and tasks of motherhood go unseen by the outside world. It’s common for moms to feel overwhelmed and unappreciated as we rock fussy babies, clean up spills, and correct the same misbehavior for the hundredth time. Nobody knows what I’m going through. My work feels invisible. In the West, there’s a big push to validate moms and bring awareness to the so-called invisibility of motherhood.

    Since the dawn of Christianity, the chief Shepherd and his undershepherds have been deploying women for the work of ministry. The resurrected Christ appeared first to Mary Magdalene and commanded her to go and declare the good news of the resurrection to the disciples. In Acts, the work of the apostles was strengthened through women serving in key areas of ministry such as praying (1:14), gathering (12:12), and instructing (18:26).

    Last month, messengers to the Southern Baptist Convention Annual Meeting in New Orleans affirmed their belief that the pastorate is reserved for men with two decisions – one to amend the SBC’s constitution to reflect that belief and another to deem two churches outside the bounds of friendly cooperation due to their employing women pastors. One of those churches was Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif., one of the SBC’s largest.
