Tributes have been paid to the Hollywood actor Val Kilmer, who has died at the age of 65 after suffering from pneumonia. His ex-girlfriend, the singer Cher, described him as ‘funny, crazy… and a great friend’, while the director Frances Ford Coppola said he had been a “joy to know”. Kilmer became a household name with roles in blockbusters like Batman Forever and Top Gun. He was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014, but recovered sufficiently to return to the screen.

More than 1,600 people are now known to have died in Myanmar, and thousands more injured after the powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake, as more bodies were pulled from the rubble of collapsed buildings. The quake struck around midday on Friday – near the country’s second city of Mandalay – followed by a series of strong aftershocks, causing widespread damage in swathes of the country, including the capital Naypyidaw.
