President Trump has said he will make his decision as to whether to join Israel in attacking Iran within the next two weeks. The White House claims that there is a “substantial chance at negotiations” to ensure peace, hence Trump’s delay. But could he be dithering because his party is divided? The war between Israel and Iran has been building for decades and now it’s spiralling out of control – but how did we get to this point? Meanwhile protests have spread to other American cities, with President Donald Trump and California Governor Gavin Newsom escalating their feud over the response to the demonstrations.

Hundreds of US Marines have arrived in Los Angeles after another night of sporadic protests over President Trump’s immigration raids. That’s on top of the 2000 National Guard troops, a number which the administration has said may double. It amounts to a significant and unusual escalation of domestic force. Mr Trump insisted the demonstrators were “paid insurrectionists”, and accused the California governor Gavin Newsom of “causing a lot of death”.
