Recently, the report of an independent audit of CMAJ’s culture and processes related to antiracism, equity, diversity, and inclusion (AEDI) was posted at cmaj.ca.1 Since the report was posted, several readers have contacted CMAJ to express concerns. The report refers to key “equity-deserving groups” with whom CMAJ should seek to reconcile, build partnerships, and engage to attract submissions, specifically Black, Muslim, and Indigenous communities.

This issue of CMAJ includes the first of a new article type on the topic of trust in health care, developed in collaboration with CMAJ’s patient advisory panel. Why focus on trust? Some physicians on CMAJ’s practice advisory panel raised the issue in a meeting in 2022, saying that they had been finding it increasingly difficult to establish and maintain trust with some of their patients, and expressing a desire to understand why this was happening and how to re-establish trust.

As of today, CMAJ will no longer be publishing a news section1 and will no longer employ a lead of patient engagement. Over the course of this year, CMAJ Group will be winding down the publication of CMAJ’s sister journal, CMAJ Open. When our current editorial fellow’s term ends, CMAJ will not offer an editorial training position for the foreseeable future.

Readers of CMAJ are likely familiar with the journal’s 4 areas of focus: health services, mental health, vulnerable populations and sepsis. In 2017, the journal’s interim editor-in-chief, Diane Kelsall, led the medical editors and CMAJ’s editorial advisory board to choose these foci, asking the questions, “Which trends in health care should concern us?” and, “What emerging issues do we worry about?”1 Over the past 5 years, CMAJ has advanced knowledge in these 4 topic areas.
